National Archives Is A Treasure Trove For Genealogists

A hunt for family records can lead all over the country and beyond. For those wanting to research Americans and American immigrants, one of the best places to look is the actual National Archives itself.

Though located in Washington, D.C., this national treasure is a real gem for historians, family history buffs and even students. With more documents than could be easily counted and access to even more, the archives is the national repository for everything from the Declaration of Independence to military records and immigration reports and beyond.

Storing a lot of its old documents on microfilm and on computer database, the archives also is pretty user friendly as well. From its homepage at www.archives.gov, family historians will find a ton of information about what the archives can and cannot do for researchers. Here they'll also find what kinds of research they can perform online and what will require an actual visit or records request.

Starting a search at the National Archives can be a bit overwhelming, but the site offers lots of information to help researchers along the way. From military records, pensions, land records, immigration reports and more, the archives is "the place" for finding information about Americans throughout history.

While you can create a solid family tree without the benefit of documents to back up the claims, actual "proof" in the form of documents will sometimes be needed to prove ancestry. In the case of claiming property or other legal holdings, the documents are worth their weight in gold.

Through the archives, those on a hunt to find an actual paper trail for their past are likely to find what they need or at least get ideas on where to turn for help.

Creating a family history can be a fun hobby or it can be a serious undertaking meant to prove ancestry, either way it pays to be diligent and take the advice of professionals.

Few archivists know more about American history and its people than those found at the National Archives. Think of it as a library that boasts everything American and you'll be on the right track.
